How Much Should You Tip? A Simple Guide

Typical tip percentages, how to split a bill fairly, and how tipping customs vary by country.

Typical tipping percentages

In the United States, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for sit-down restaurant service, with 18% a common middle ground; many people tip more for excellent service. For counter service, delivery and other situations, smaller tips are normal. When unsure, a clean 18% is a safe default.

Splitting the bill

To split fairly, add the tip to the bill first, then divide by the number of people. A tip calculator does this instantly: enter the bill, the tip percentage and the headcount to see the tip, the grand total and the amount each person owes — no awkward mental maths at the table.

Tipping customs vary by country

Tipping norms differ widely. In much of Europe a service charge may already be included and small rounding is enough; in Japan tipping can even be considered rude; in the US and Canada tipping is expected and part of workers’ income. Check local customs when you travel.

FAQ

Should I tip on the total or the pre-tax amount?+

Either is acceptable. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the total is also common and slightly more generous.
