How to Write Your Name in Braille
Spell your name in Braille letter by letter — how the dots and capital sign work.
Braille is built from dot patterns
Each Braille character is a “cell” of up to six raised dots in two columns of three. Every letter has its own pattern: A is a single top-left dot (⠁), B adds the dot below it (⠃), and so on. To write your name, you simply place the cell for each letter in order.
Capital letters and your name
In Braille, a capital letter is shown by putting a special “capital sign” (⠠) before the letter. So a name like “Sam” is the capital sign, then S, then a and m. Most everyday Braille only capitalises the first letter of a name, just like print.
Generate it instantly
Rather than looking up each cell, paste your name into a Braille translator to get the Unicode Braille instantly — handy for cards, crafts and learning. Remember the on-screen Braille is a visual representation; true tactile Braille needs an embosser or refreshable display.
