Medieval & Blackletter Fonts Explained

A short history of blackletter — and how to use medieval text for clans, games and bios.

Where blackletter comes from

Blackletter is the dense, angular script used across medieval Europe and in the first printed books, including the Gutenberg Bible. Styles like Textura, Fraktur and Schwabacher fall under this family — what people loosely call “medieval”, “gothic” or “Old English” lettering today.

Using medieval text today

Unicode includes a Fraktur alphabet, so a medieval font generator can produce copy-paste blackletter for fantasy game clans, RPG names, tattoos and dramatic bios. The bold variant gives the heavier “Old English” look.

FAQ

Is gothic the same as medieval blackletter?+

Yes, broadly — “gothic” here refers to blackletter, the medieval script style, not the gothic subculture or sans-serif “Gothic” typefaces.
