What Is Zalgo Text, and How Is It Made?
How combining Unicode marks create the creepy, glitchy “cursed” look — and where it works.
The idea behind zalgo text
Zalgo text is normal text covered in chaotic, dripping marks that make it look glitched or “cursed”. It became an internet meme associated with creepy, corrupted imagery, and it’s popular for spooky usernames, edgy posts and Halloween captions.
How it works
Unicode has “combining characters” — accents and diacritics that stack on top of, below, or through the preceding letter. Zalgo generators pile many of these onto each character at once. The base letters stay readable underneath, while the stacked marks create the overflowing, glitchy effect.
Where it does and doesn’t work
Most chat apps and social platforms display zalgo, but some strip excess combining marks for safety or performance, so very heavy zalgo may render lighter or get cut. If a platform removes the effect, try a shorter phrase or a milder “glitch” style.
FAQ
Is zalgo text safe to use?+
Yes — it’s just standard Unicode combining characters. Some forms can be hard to read, so use it for short, decorative text rather than important information.
